It was really funny yesterday when Jadon went to school with spiky hair for picture day (along with shirt &tie). As he entered his classroom he kept looking around telling other how he liked their hair, but with a look of expectancy for compliments in return!

Last week when Jadon was able to get to school in time to play on the playground, no one was using the slides because they were all wet with heavy dew (it was a foggy morning). He had wowed everyone with daring to go down (apparently he had gone down so fast he plopped onto the ground at the bottom of the slide). When I saw him again, he was at the top of the slides standing alone with a crowd of kids at the bottom chanting, 'Do it! Do it! Do it!' as he smilingly looked around, taking in the attention with his soaking wet pants. He did go down again (without plopping onto his butt), & afterward lots of other kids followed him onto the slides (after all, he'd nearly dried one of them for them), but we had to have a talk about peer pressure & trying to evaluate decisions based on whether it would please God or merely people. Poignant learning moment.

Yesterday, Jadon read enough books to earn a chocolate bar from us, for which we gave him our 'equivalent': 6 Ferrero Roche hazelnut truffles. We were so pleased when he very willingly gave one of his prized chocolates (he RARELY gets any sweets) to a hungry homeless man (who blessed him for his generosity). Later, we were moved again when he insisted that Mommy & Daddy should get one chocolate each as well...what a son!

Today Jadon finished his first week in Ms. Mazzuca's class. Lots of adjusting (sleep schedule, longer days, different expectations, missing Ms. Ramirez & her class, esp. Kaitlyn Otsuka). Expect good things for our son, praying he will continue to learn to find his meaning& joy in Jesus who is worthy of his life & service.

yesterday morning over breakfast we were looking at God's world (the globe) as usual, but along with a photo of jadon's kindergarten class. i was saying something like this: 'if all the kids in Ms. Ramirez' class continue to learn about God's math & God's languages & God's science... maybe one day God will send Hans to Japan to tell people about Jesus, maybe Brooklynn will go to Libya, Justin to Honduras, Kaitlin O. to Niger, & Christine to Finland... & where do you want to go?' jadon replied, 'i want to go where Kaitlyn O. [Dr. Otsuka's daughter] goes.'

on the trip to Legoland with Akong & Ama

Jadon, being the night owl that he is (or WAS before early-bird kindergarten started), was the toughest to get up & going during his trip with Akong, Ama, Nathan, & Timothy to Legoland earlier this month.  Ama recounted to us that one morning, when they were continually trying to coax him out of slumber, he declared, "My mommy says I need to sleep so I can grow!"

For the record, that's what we usually say to him at NIGHT when he won't go down to sleep!

Fw: jadon

For the record, Jadon had declined to eat shaved ice with me at that time... funny Mowgli!

August 26, 2011

I arrived at Judson & Brown to see no students in the playground.
Apparently, it was way too hot and the teacher on duty had the
children stay inside an air conditioned classroom and watch a video.
I peeked in from the doorway to see Jadon wearing his colorful
froggy/animal hat. As Jadon walked towards me, the teacher said, "Oh,
this hat is much better. No strings to get stuck. He wore his hat
all day." I was proud of Jadon for wearing his hat at school without
my presence. Jadon said, "Hi mommy" and started digging into his
ziplock bag of M&Ms (leftover from graphing and math activites in
class earlier). I said, "No Jadon. No M&Ms. I don't want you to eat
M&Ms." As Jadon made a quick grab for a handful of M&Ms, I quickly
squeezed the bag to close off Jadon's hand from grabbing a handful.
When Jadon pulled his hand out of the bag, both he & I peered into his
hand as he opened it to see how many M&Ms he was able to quickly grab.
Jadon's hopeful look fell when he saw he only had one M&M but he
quickly popped it into his mouth before I could swip it from his hand.
My disgust turned to a smile when I saw he was only able to grab 1
M&M. I let him eat it but told him "No candy, okay?" Jadon asked,
"Can I eat it after my lunch?" I answered, "No. We don't eat candy
at home. School might be the only place you can eat candy." Hearing
me, the teacher said, "Would you like me to tell Jadon's teacher not
to let him eat candy at school?" I said, "Yes. That would be great."

As we were driving home, I said, "Jadon, I don't want you to eat candy
at school, okay? You have to let Ms. Ramirez know that you don't eat
candy, okay?"
Jadon: "How come other kids can eat it?"
Me: "Because their mommies let them."
Jadon: "How come their mommies let them?"
Me: "Because they don't know it's bad for them."
Jadon: "How come they don't know it's bad for them and you do?"
Me: "Because Mommy and daddy are doctors."
Jadon: (Mumbling under his breath) "I wish you weren't."

Sid had Jadon take off his clothes to get ready to put outdoor clothes
on (from the laundry room) to go to Auntie Ruth's for piano lesson.
However, Sid decided they had a little time before they had to leave
so he was going to have some shaved ice first. As Sid was sitting in
the family room eating his shaved ice, Jadon walked into the room and
said, "Daddy, I don't want to be naked like this." (Jadon had only
his underwear on because Sid had him take off his clothes in
preparation to put on outdoor clothes.) Sid asked Jadon, "You don't
want to be like Mowgli?" Jadon said, "No."

While Evangelina is a happy baby herself, we note that Jadon had a much easier laugh when he was a baby. On the other hand, while Jadon was a very wiggly baby, Evangelina is far MORE wiggly, wiggling as she tries to fall asleep, wiggling across the bed, wiggling in her sleep. Interestingly the person who makes Evangelina laugh the most is none other than Big Brother Jadon.

a few weeks ago jadon was singing the recently popular refrain, 'i am a friend of God...' like this: 'i am a friend of God, i am a friend of God, i am a friend of God, he calls me Ray!' (rather than 'he calls me friend!') we related this a few days ago to Uncle Pastor Ray & Auntie Monica & they got a kick out of it. we also shared how jadon was singing Daddy's choir piece: 'holy & exalted, mighty & adored...' his own way: 'holy & exhausted, mighty & explored, blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!'

when reviewing music theory in his first piano book (alfred's prep course for the young beginner level a), i asked jadon, 'what does forte mean?' to which he answered, 'it's like it hurts your ears.' 'what does mezzoforte mean?' 'it's like it almost hurts your ears but it doesn't.' 'what does piano mean?' 'it means you can't hear it.'

after weeks of listening to daddy practice choir music for the easter cantata, he starts to croon earnestly 'holy & exhausted' rather than 'holy & exalted'. uncle pastor john got a kick out of that too!

mommy says that when jadon sees her come into the classroom, he routinely asks loudly 'who wants a hug? raise your hand!' & then gives a round of hugs to his eager friends before he has to go.
Earlier today when Evangelina had just woken up & was crying, Jadon came over & kissed her, saying, "Ge-Ge is here."  Mom took Evangelina aside to feed her & Jadon went across the room to play as he said aloud matter-of-factly, "Do you know what Ge-ge is doing, Evangelina?   Ge-ge is playing... all by himself."

Later as he was playing, he said, "Do you know what Evangelina?  Ge-ge would like to play with you too."
