whattaya want first? the good news or the bad news?
Way back in April I asked our children separately, "What does the Bible mean to you?" Each had a very different answer. To my shame & sadness, Jadon answered, "[The Bible] tells you about the past so that you can change it." A few days later when I asked Evangelina, she turned to Jadon with open hands before her (as if she had an open Bible in hand) and said, "I'm going to read the Bible to you-- 'Jesus loves you, even he prays for you, even he always loves you. The end.'" This really makes me wonder what it really is that we are teaching our kids about God (& how they may have different ways of hearing what we tell them)... May God help us to communicate the true Good News of God's perfect gift to us undeserving sinners!

roundabout request
A few weeks ago Jadon & I were talking about fear. I was trying to explain the difference between the kind of fear God doesn't want us to have (we can have peace because He is always with us), & the kind of fear response God has actually given us so that we can jump to action (for example, if we were faced with two lions in the house). As is often the case, Jadon had a quick answer to everything I said, including the following:
"If there were two lions in our house, I'd go get the knives & immediately throw them at them like darts..."
Then, with a look of pensive realization, he continued, "That's why I want a dartboard, Daddy!"

1st 10U hat-trick yesterday
Jadon played probably his best game yesterday at Icetown:
4 goals (the first of which was when his team was shorthanded due to penalty), a few good passes, & staying ready for the rebounds. Also, a wonderful team mentality when he was in the lockerroom afterward, of special note since he was just moved to this team in the middle of the season & still doesn't know everyone yet. We are very, very proud of our son. (Thank you, Heavenly Father!)

our little gentleMAN
Earlier this evening while strolling outside at Citrus Plaza with Evangelina & Mommy ahead of Jadon & me, we approached the doorway at Barnes & Noble when Jadon sped ahead of Evangelina & Mommy (a rather long way around a table) to grab the door handle. As our women walked in, Jadon declared, "Ladies always first..." Then with the women safely ahead, "...then, human beings."
time is NOT money
One of the poignant things about the whole process of considering changing jobs has been Jadon's matter-of-fact perspective on the importance of time-off from work, at least in comparison to salary. When I've shared with him the two main options before us, with one making more money (over time) but with less paid time off & the other making less money but with much more paid time off, he's repeatedly stated what to him is the obvious answer: the job with more time off to spend with the family. Earlier today when I told him of our decision (which happens to be the one with the less time off), he even cried briefly, not realizing that the decision was far more complex than thinking about money vs. time off. In fact, we made this decision in great part because it would mean a lot more daily time together with family (eg: before school & after work) than if I stayed with the job with more time off but had to make an hour's commute each way.
I'm currently (slowly) reading "The Five Love Languages of Children," which lists physical touch, affirming words, acts of service, gift-giving, and quality time as the five love languages that people (including children) 'speak' & understand, with each person often 'speaking/understanding/desiring' one over the others. I already knew that physical touch & affirming words loom large in Jadon's understanding of love. Quality time, I'm realizing (& am humbled by), is quite important to him, as well.

Wireless Message
the other night jadon was reading a book to evangelina a book called 'big brother, little brother' when it got to the part about the big brother pretending to eat worms. Jadon proudly began to teach Evangelina: 'Never, never, never eat worms, OK Mina?' Then he got the look of 'there might be the special situation when my 'never' rule doesn't apply', so he added, '...unless you're homeless, since I guess it does have some protein & vitamins.'

acceptable forms of P.D.A.
Earlier while the kids were watching the movie "Paddington" at my office, apparently a scene showed some rather affectionate expression between a man & woman.
JJ, sitting at the computer next to the kids, quickly said, "Cover your eyes! You should not be watching that kind of stuff... kissing!"
Jadon quickly retorted, "They're husband and wife!"
JJ: "Are they married?"
Jadon: "Yes."
JJ: "OK."

Feats of feet!
Tonight at Pathway's kids' club Jadon apparently learned about how Jesus washed His disciples' feet, & that we are called to serve people as we follow Jesus. The handout Jadon brought home included various activities about feet ("How many feet are in your home?", "How many left feet?", etc.). At the bottom of the sheet was the problem "Name three ways you can use your feet to serve others."
Here were Jadon's answers:
1. walk other people to hospitals
2. kick bad guys invading your house
3. let your sister sit on your feet

a first to remember
Very proud of our son & happy for him as he got his first 10U ice hockey goal yesterday (4/18)...
Afterward, Coach Anthony was very classy in presenting the game puck to Jadon, too.

Losing is such a hard thing to do
Last weekend was a real heartbreak loss at the hockey rink. For most of the game, we were up by 3 or more points for most of the game, & Jadon had scored 6 goals and feeling confident as ever. Slowly but surely (& with the help of quite a few un-called fouls), the opposing team picked away at our lead, and by the end of regulation time the score was tied 9-9. Not long into overtime, the opposing team scored the sudden-death goal, & we lost. That was the first time Jadon ever cried after a game... (Lord help us to show him where his real joy, meaning, worth, & approval are found.)

GOOD good news?
This evening we received the good news that Jadon got an honorable mention for his performance earlier today at the Bach Festival, which Evangelina & I had to miss on account of her being ill with a cold. When Jadon woke up to go to the bathroom, I told him I had some "good news" for him. He asked me what it was, & I told him of his award. In his drowsy state, he sweetly responded, "Oh, I thought you were going to tell me that Mina was better [from her cold]."

Don't bite the hand...
This evening we were in the living room sharing some time in worship when I asked everyone, "What are some things that you we can thank Jesus for?"
Jadon chimed in immediately, "I'm so thankful for my mom who guides me, for my little sister Mina, & for Dad who is the hand of the household..."
JJ & I had a hard time stifling our laughter. I have to admit that I wonder which function of the "hand"Jadon felt best characterized my role in our home: spanking? helping? scolding? feeding?
